History
This building was built in 1849 as a barn, or
livery stable, for a hotel, The Planters Hotel,
which used to sit right in front of the building.
Unfortunately, since that time the hotel has
burned down twice. However, the barn has
18" thick limestone walls which prove to be
very difficult to burn. We've very happy the
building has survived so long because it has
quite a history attached to it. There were
some famous people in this building. Mr.
Abraham Lincoln stabled his mules in the
barn while staying at the hotel. He was in
Hannibal working on a case for the railroads
as a lawyer. Also, Sam Clemens was in this
building as well. He was friends with the
Bowen family who ran it and he, and their two
sons, all grew up to be riverboat pilots and
life long friends.
Heritage Stage Productions purchased this
building in 2003 and began long-term
renovation project. Since being a barn the
barn was used for many things including,
restaurants, furniture store, trolley depot, and
antique mall. however before we got it, it had
sat empty for almost 20 years.
Heritage Stage Productions is a non-profit
organization and all donations are tax
deductible. If you would like to help out with
